Researching new video display options

When you need to design memorable event that has a significant impact on your audience, how do you choose between the limitless options for video display? Even if you’re familiar with all the buzz words like LCD, LED, DLP, plasma and projection, how do you decide which one’s best for your event?  Is cost a concern? How can you be sure that all your attendees can see the video? 

Our onsite events and media team, Q Creative, is constantly on the hunt for the best answers to these questions. And, once a new event technology hits the market, they are quickly and efficiently sifting through the hype to figure out whether it’s right for our clients.  A good example is their research into LED systems used to display video. 

There are a ton of LED display products on the market and most will give you some pretty impressive results.  The downfalls of this technology – limited viewing angles, low resolution, and significant time (and cost!) spent in pre-production and programming – can be daunting. 

Enter Christie’s new display technology, called MicroTiles. Christie is a visual technologies company that offers display solutions for business, entertainment, and industry. They have worked in film projection since 1929 and have installed over 100,000 projection solutions worldwide. MicroTiles combine the best features of two display technologies – LED and DLP –into one product. These stackable 16” x 12” blocks of video offer significantly improved viewing angles, more accurate color rendering and sharp, high-resolution imaging that is unmatched by LED alone.  They can be easily snapped together in almost any configuration to create a visually-stunning video wall.

Based on their research into this option, our Q Creative team recently worked with a client to integrate MicroTiles into their 2011 Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain. They found that the MicroTiles product was easy to work with during pre-production and delivered dramatic, high-impact results for the client.  But, don’t take our word for it; you can see Christie MicroTiles in action at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, on BBC Worldwide and The Colbert Report.
