Companies practicing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)—a built-in, active commitment from a business to benefit the greater community—stand to benefit in many ways, including increased profitability. Consumers make conscious choices to purchase from responsible businesses, and employees form a stronger sense of loyalty to the company.
Of course, energized employees are happier, and more productive. One of the great ways to inspire employees is to bring them together as a team for a team-building philanthropic project. We are proud to do our part in CSR—such as donating un-served food to local kitchens—and we always want to help our clients with their own CSR initiatives.
When planning your next corporate outing, event or training curriculum, consider adding CSR team building to the agenda. Here are a few ideas to get started.
Team Build. Put your team to work by building toys, furniture, or any item that can then be donated to local charities to help those in need in your community. Break your team into pairs or smaller groups and start a competition—winning teams build the fastest, and exhibit the best teamwork.
Scavenger Hunt. Build a list of items that would be helpful to a local organization—perhaps school supplies for a group of students, or care packages for deployed military—and send your team out to collect them (either on-site or throughout the area). Set a time limit and ground rules so that team members must prioritize tasks and work together.
Cook-Off. Set up a chili-cooking competition, barbeque battle, or cake baking challenge. From devising recipes to collecting ingredients, and cooking to plating, everything about a cook-off requires team participation. When the dust flour settles, put the lion’s share of the goodies aside for donation to local kitchens.
Putting the needs of the community into your business plans is what CSR is all about. Make it a part of your company culture and the benefits will follow.
